Open source software has got to be the
best thing since sliced bread. I use it whenever I can, in
preference to secret source software. Open source is reliable,
free, verifiable, fixable, and can't be taken away. In addition
to
using it, I also contribute to it, by reporting bugs, and selectively
adding the functionality I want. Below is a partial list of open
source software I use and endorse.
- Apache web server
- Mysql database
- SQLite database
- Perl programming language, and
Open Perl IDE
as a
perl debugging and editing shell.
- Mozilla browser
- VNC remote desktop and ZeBeDee secure tunneling
software. My own largest contribution to open source is ZVNC,
which
integrates ZeBeDee and VNC.
- Gaim instant messenger
- Popfile spam filter
- CVS version control
system, and Tortise CVS
windows desktop interface
- Eclipse Java development
environment.
- Notepad2 simple
text editor, and my own extension, NotepadCrypt,
which adds AES encryption.
You'll find many more open source projects, of all sizes and stages of
development, at
Sourceforge.
